William Spratling Sterling Silver & Wood Necklace

This is a beautiful necklace designed by William Spratling of Taxco, Mexico. It is made of graduated sterling silver and wood beads. The clasp is marked with Spratling’s “WS” script mark/logo encircled with the words “SPRATLING MADE IN MEXICO”. The silver standard mark is Spratling’s own “SPRATLING SILVER”. This mark was used in the 1940s.

This necklace is composed of three strands of beads, two of them are what appears to be handmade hollow silver beads and one strand of wood beads. The shortest strand is approximately 16 1/2″ long. This necklace is in very good vintage condition. A few of the beads do show evidence of use as does the clasp having small dents. The clasp is strong and functions perfectly. I did have a similar Spratling necklace a few years ago that was the reverse of this one. That necklace had two strands of wood beads and one strand of silver beads.
