Victorian 18K Gold Diamond Sapphire Ruby Anchor Pin/Pendant

A stunning large 18K yellow gold anchor brooch heavily studded with old mine cut diamonds, antique cushion cut rubies and an antique cushion cut sapphire. The stones are all of very good quality, with bright coloring and excellent clarity. The exposed gold surfaces have the slightly matte Russian finish popular in better quality French jewels of the period. The anchor is surrounded by a hand-braided rope. The back of the pin is finished with a pierced gallery, itself engraved with a twisted rope motif. The back retains its original c-clasp and extended pinstem marked with French hallmarks and an unidentified master goldsmith mark. The anchor can also be worn from a chain passed through the large ring at the top.

In Victorian symbolism, the anchor represented “hope” or “steadfastness.” Blue, white and red gemstones used together in French jewelry usually symbolized patriotic fervor. Taken together, this brooch would have sent an unmistakable message of renewed hope in the French Republic around 1870, when the second empire collapsed and was replaced by a democratic government.
