Sellier – Carrossier


The section of 25 engraved plates on saddles and carriages from the “Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences, des Métiers, et des Arts” printed between 1751 and 1772 and edited by Diderot and d’Alembert. It is in a folio format (15 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches) and bound with a vellum spine and marbled boards. There are 3 full-page plates relating to saddles and saddle making, 14 folding plates (about 15 x 19 inches as they vary slightly in size) of carriages. There is a full-page plate of a “chaise à porteur (a sedan chair), one of a broutte (a French version of the rickshaw) and 2 full-page plates of of parts of carriages. The 4 pages of text are explanations keyed to the plates. A little bit of soiling and offsetting.
