Pair of Fox Terriers by John Emms

A pair of hand-colored photogravure prints depicting Champion Sylph and Champion Oxonian after paintings by John Emms. They were published by Fawcett McQuire & Co., who also published the highly regarded “Dogs by Well-Known Authorities.” These two prints appear in that work in the monochrome state with the names of the dogs engraved as part of the plate below each image. Here the names are not part of the plate (they are in manuscript on the mats) suggesting that they were probably proofs that were selected for coloring by hand. They are signed in pencil at the lower left by John Emms. The size of the mat opening is 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches and the framed size is 15 5/8 x 17 5/8 inches.
