Leon Dabo

Dabo enjoyed widespread acclaim in a career that stretched nearly a century. He was one of the primary students of Whistler and his work was a “virtual international style by 1910,” who created works of “decorative and spiritual abstraction that became icons of their age” (David Cleveland, A History of American Tonalism).

Dabo is known especially for his pastels, florals and tonalist landscapes. Later in his career, he moved to a brighter palette.

Dabo’s work is owned by just about every major museum–Met, MOMA, Musee d’Orsay, Jeu d’Paume, Brooklyn Museum, Montclair Museum, etc. Dabo’s work is featured prominently in the definitive work on American Tonalism by Cleveland.

Dabo’s work is in the process of being rediscovered after along period when his estate was closely held. Please see this recent article in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/20/arts/design/restoration-project-a-history-of-leon-dabo.html?_r=3.
