George Morland

$0.00

A libertine and frequently in debt, Morland is known for his rural and sporting scenes, sentimental but often with a bit of an edge. We believe this to be the only self-portrait extant.

Provenance: from the Countess of Jersey, through her executor; the Hearn Collection (1913); Samuel Klein (1932, owner of Kleins Department Stores); thence to his daughter Ida Stone; to her estate (2006). Apparently unsigned.
(Note: an article appearing in 1905 notes that Hearn had four Morlands in his collection and that “The Early English School” was a particular favorite of his. More than fifty works from his collection are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. See here: http://www.jstor.org/stable/25435591?seq=1&).
