French Victorian Renaissance Revival 18K Gold, Emerald & Opal Necklace

A stunning Napoleon III 18K gold necklace composed of ornate links, those in the front set with emeralds and opals. The opals a set in oval links formed as wreaths of roses, while the emeralds are set in lozenge-shaped links that echo the rose motif. The remaining links are of four-lobed form decorated with fleur-de-lys. The opals have semi-translucent body color and would be characterized as jelly opal. The play of color is nice, with a good range or red, orange, blue and green. The emeralds are finely colored and are most likely of Colombian origin. The four-lobed links have an ingenious rotating mechanism where they join the gem-set links that keeps the necklace lying flat. Stamped with French 18K marks.
