Erle Loran

Loran was a leading member of the so-called “Berkeley Group” of Western painters who were heavily influenced by the work of Cezanne but placed greater emphasis on linear and textural qualities, flat planes of color, and shallow “picture box” treatment of space. Loran was known for his Western landscapes especially his Cubist mountainscapes often featuring peublos and Indians. He later moved more heavily to abstraction. He was close to the artist Hans Hoffman, friends with de Kooning and a teacher of Diebenkorn among others. He taught for many years at the University of California/Berkeley. His work is held by the Smithsonian, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum, among others.
