Young was a self-taught painter who emerged from prison as a young man and by dint of his striking, expressionist vision of urban life and mammoth output over more than three decades transformed the forgotten Miami neighborhood of Overtown into a vision of beauty. He had a tremendous ability to twin urban contemporary art with the high art motifs of Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Delacroix and El Greco.

Young developed his own iconography to describe the lives of the people in his neighborhood which includes wild horses, marching people, railroad tracks, pregnant women and angel heads. His work is held by the Corcoran, the Smithsonian, the American Museum of Folk Art, and the Bass Museum among others.

One of the nicest Young's we've seen. Provenance: Colin Fisher Gallery, Cathedral City, CA
