Woodstock artist Agnes Hart was known first for her WPA style works. Later in her career she moved to AbEx and created vibrant., impactful works in the style for which she became best known. Hart was the wife of artist Josef Presser with whom she enjoyed a tempestuous marriage.
She studied at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida; at Iowa State University with Josef Presser, Paul Burlin and Lucile Blanch; and printmaking with Reginald Neal. She had numerous one-woman exhibitions, primarily in Woodstock in the 50s, 60s and 70s, and was in many group exhibitions including the Met "American Painting Today" (1950), PAFA, Butler Art Institute and NAD, among others. Her art was also published in New Deal for Art, 1977 and Works Progress Administration Artists, Then and Now, 1977.
Her works can be found in the collection of the Met.
