ITEM DESCRIPTION
A rare coin silver Lady's tankard with a corkscrew thumbpiece, James Howell & Co., Philadelphia, PA c.1802-1810.
I have not researched the derivation of the term, Lady's tankard for a small tankard, but there it is.
And Lady's tankards are, as described, rare.
James Howell had a very interesting career, spanning a period 1800-1815.
He was in a short-term partnership with the eminent Joseph Richardson around 1800-02.
Later on he trained Samuel Kirk until 1815 when Kirk launched his own career.
The handle is slightly pushed to one side, thumbpiece too.
Probably a fall, but no splits or repairs.
Apart from that it in in very good condition and has a good patina.
There is a contemporary monogram, OMJ in script.
Dimensions: Height 5.5” to top of thumbpiece, 4.5” to top of lid,
base diam 4.4”
Weight: 14.4 Troy oz.
